May 12, 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Board of Education of Calvert County Public Schools made two administrative appointments at the meeting on May 12, 2016. Rebecca Bowen was appointed as the principal of Mill Creek Middle School, and Steve Lucas was appointed principal of Calvert High School.

A graduate of Calvert High and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Ms. Bowen began her career teaching social studies in Calvert County Public Schools. While teaching, she earned her Master’s Degree from McDaniel College and subsequently served as a dean of students and then vice principal. In 2011, she was appointed principal of Mill Creek Middle and led the building for two years before returning to her love of social studies. She has been the district Supervisor of Social Studies since 2013 and now looks forward to returning to a school building. Dr. Daniel D. Curry, Superintendent, said, “The foundation of our school improvement effort relies on having a principal who is the instructional leader. We are excited to have someone return to the principalship after serving as an instructional supervisor. Ms. Bowen knows instruction well, and she knows how to support teachers to make them the best they can be.”

Mr. Lucas entered the field of education after retiring from a twenty-year career in the United States Marine Corps. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Excelsior College and his Master’s from the University of Illinois. After his retirement from the Marines, he was the Fitness Director at the Naval Health Clinic in Great Lakes, Illinois. In 2008, he began teaching in the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program at Huntingtown High. After earning his administrator credentials from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, he was appointed as vice principal at Patuxent High and then Huntingtown High. Dr. Curry believes Mr. Lucas’ diverse experiences will serve him well as he steps in to lead a school. “I really like the idea of having a retired Marine as high school principal,” said Dr. Curry. “He knows what effective leadership looks like and will get his team moving toward the same goal –student success. He knows what the job of high school principal requires, and he has had the opportunity to learn it from some of our best. We expect great success at Calvert High.”

Both appointments will begin on July 1, 2016.

Code of Conduct Approved

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 13, 2016

At the May 12, 2016 meeting, the Board of Education approved the 2016-2017 Students’ Rights, Responsibilities, and Code of Conduct.

The most significant changes in the document involve the student dress code. Kim Roof, Director of Student Services, said the system carefully considered input from students when revising the guidelines. At the Student Town Hall Forum held earlier this year, middle and high school students spoke persuasively about the need to update the dress code to reflect current styles. Consequently, leggings are no longer prohibited. Skirts, skorts and shorts must be longer than the longest fingertip when students stand with arms fully extended downward at their sides, rather than being required to be no more than three inches above the knee. This adjustment, said Ms. Roof, allows for differences in body proportions rather than relying on an arbitrary measurement.

Minor adjustments were made to the attendance policy. The Code now stipulates that attendance is taken every day that school is in session. Students who leave early, come in late or fail to attend school the last several days school is in session will be marked accordingly. “It’s essential for safety purposes,” said Ms. Roof, “that we have an accurate record of who is and is not in our schools at all times.”

The Students’ Rights, Responsibilities, and Code of Conduct was revised based on research of policies in other school districts in addition to input from staff, students and community members. The document was presented to the Board of Education for review at the April 14, 2016 meeting. The Board received public comments through May 11 and considered the community responses prior to approving the Code.

CCPS Partners with Public Library for Student Library Cards

June 2, 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) is partnering with Calvert Library to make it easier for students to use the public library resources. Through the partnership, each student in CCPS will be issued a student library card. The card will allow students to check out print materials, plus access digital resources and online tutoring. Downloadable materials, such as books for eReaders, will also be available to support school success.

Dr. Daniel D. Curry, Superintendent, believes providing students with convenient access to library resources will enhance their academic experience. “Future Ready, that’s what this is all about,” said Dr. Curry. “It represents another step toward giving our students unlimited access to resources that support their learning. Twenty-four hours a day. Seven days a week. Whether the school door is open or closed, our children will be able to research and collaborate.”

The student library card has a different level of access than a traditional library card. For example, students may only check out up to five print items at a time. There will be no fines associated with this account; however, items must be returned as they normally would. If a student already has a library card, the student card acts as an additional card, or the child can choose to use only the student card. A parent or guardian may have his or her name added to the student account.

Carrie Plymire, Director of Calvert Library, said that she hopes removing the threat of fines will enable more students to access books for their studies and for expanding their minds outside of the classroom. “We’re happy to partner with Calvert County Public Schools,” she said, “to get access to our print and digital collections into the hands of every student. Facilitating life-long learning and providing connections to one another and the world is our mission. The more students know about what the library has to offer, the more tools they have to build a successful future.”
