Eight students from Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) advanced to National History Day after competing at Maryland History Day, the culmination of a year-long educational program sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council. Forty-six CCPS students competed at the Maryland event on May 2, 2015.

The students who advanced to the national competition in June are:
• Gabriella Smith of Plum Point Middle School—Category: Historical Paper
• Grady Fort of Southern Middle School—Category: Website
• Emma Nahas of Northern Middle School—Category: Website
• Parker Nickel of Northern Middle School—Category: Exhibit
• Calvin Crunkleton, Priscilla Means, Christian Kincaid and Kyle Hurley of Northern High School—Category: Performance

In addition to the student honorees, Mellen Fallica, teacher at Plum Point Middle School, received the Calvert County History Day Teacher of the Year award.

The National History Day program encourages students to explore local, state, national and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to an annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums and oral history interviews. They analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topics' significance in history and create final projects that present their work.
